The Ocean Spirits
Known as the Moon and Ocean Spirits, they were among the first entities to cross over to the physical world, coming to reside in the Spirit Oasis at the Northern Water Tribe. They exist as two koi fish, maintaining balance through an eternal dance of push and pull.

Tui and La resemble the Chinese yin-yang symbol, a symbol of balance and Taoism, in their coloring and mannerisms. La represents Yin in appearance, being associated with cool, dark, and watery, and Yang in personality, being associated with being active and strong.

“La” (拉) means “pull” in Mandarin Chinese, compared to “Tui” (推), which means “push”. According to Princess Yue, the ancient waterbenders saw the tides push and pull, giving a hint to the Ocean and Moon Spirits’ existence in the tribe.
